Brief
To produce a photobook with over 30 photos of the Southwold coast as part of an MA student’s Final Project. Focused on the flood zone in Southwold, and the threat of flooding to the area as a result of climate change.
The brief was flexible in terms of format, size, layout, and required feedback from multiple tutors and publishers, in addition to the client. The book required photographs, supporting literary quotations, an artist’s statement, a foreword, a physical photograph at the back of the book, and some reference to the map of the flood zone.
Solution
The final product is a hardback, section-sewn book, which adds formality to the contents, and allows the book to lay flat for users to enjoy. Additionally, the book uses only square pages, which compliment the almost exclusively square photographs.
The photobook incorporates transparent Xerox sheets to show close-ups of the flood zone throughout, which creates a layering effect that “floods” the adjoining photographs. This is mirrored in the Prussian blue which premeates the cover subtitle, spinal tape, and endpapers.
